if you mount stuff in /media then it will show up on the desktop, very cool.

if you want something more perminant, and dont want to clutter up the desktop, mount it in /mnt

here is my fstab file:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
#
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/sda2 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
/dev/sda6 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/hdc /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/hdd /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0
/dev/sdb /media/usb0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0

#manually added
/dev/sda5 /mnt/debian auto rw,user 0 0
/dev/sda4 /mnt/suse auto user,exec 0 0
/dev/sda1 /mnt/winnt ntfs ro,users,gid=users,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/media ntfs ro,users,gid=users,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/data auto user,exec 0 0
/dev/hda5 /mnt/linbig auto user,exec 0 0
